Changes & later-life information
State Pension & National Insurance
Your State Pension entitlement depends on your National Insurance record. The official GOV.UK services below let you check your forecast and your contribution record, including whether gaps may affect your pension.
Check your State Pension
See how much State Pension you could get, when you can get it and whether there are ways to increase it.
Check your NI record
Review National Insurance contributions and credits, see whether there are gaps and whether filling a gap could improve your forecast.
Important: Do not pay voluntary National Insurance contributions solely because a year shows as incomplete. Check first whether paying for that year will actually increase your State Pension.
Pension Credit & help with living costs
Pension Credit is separate from the State Pension and can provide additional support for people over State Pension age on a low income. Eligibility depends on individual circumstances, so members should use the current GOV.UK guidance and calculator rather than relying on fixed figures shown on third-party websites.
Tax on pension income
Pension income can affect the tax you pay. HMRC supplies the tax code used by pension providers, and people with more than one pension or other source of income can have more than one tax code.
Bereavement & surviving partners
If a Fund member dies, the Fund should be notified so that any pension and survivor benefits can be dealt with. Depending on the circumstances, a surviving spouse, civil partner or qualifying partner may also wish to check whether Bereavement Support Payment or other government support is available.
Protect yourself from pension scams
Be cautious about unexpected calls, messages or offers involving pensions or investments. Do not give out personal or banking information until you have independently verified who you are dealing with.
Independent guidance
MoneyHelper is a government-backed service offering free guidance about pensions, retirement and money. It can help members understand their options before they decide whether regulated financial advice is needed.
