Travel facilities can be an important part of retirement for former British Transport Police colleagues, but eligibility and conditions are not always the same for everyone. Arrangements can depend on service history, retirement date, the organisation providing the facility and the rules in force at the time of travel.

Check eligibility before travelling
Do not assume that a facility available during service continues unchanged after retirement. Confirm the current eligibility rules with the organisation responsible for the scheme or concession. If you have written confirmation or a current card, pass or schedule, check its expiry date and any conditions of use.
Questions worth checking
- Who is eligible and whether eligibility depends on date or length of service.
- Whether a spouse, partner or dependant is covered.
- Which operators, routes or services are included or excluded.
- Whether peak-time, class-of-travel or reservation restrictions apply.
- What identification, pass, card or supporting document must be carried.
- Whether the facility must be renewed or revalidated.
- What to do if a card is lost, damaged or has incorrect details.
Use current documents and official contacts
Travel arrangements can change. Old circulars, social-media posts and information remembered from service may no longer reflect the current position. Use the most recent policy wording or official contact details available to you.

Planning a journey
If a journey depends on a concession, check the rules before buying connecting tickets or making non-refundable arrangements. Staff at a station or operator may need to see specific evidence of eligibility, and a concession may not apply to every part of a multi-operator journey.
