Retirement does not remove the value of the friendships and support networks built during a career with British Transport Police. Former officers, staff and their families can face many of the same practical, financial and personal pressures as anyone else, while some issues may be connected with previous police service.
NARBTPO helps eligible members stay connected and can signpost people towards appropriate sources of support. The Association is not an emergency, medical, legal or financial service, so specialist matters should be handled by the organisation qualified to deal with them.
What NARBTPO can provide
The Association can provide a point of contact, help people maintain links with former colleagues and identify useful organisations. Depending on the circumstances, support may involve Association contacts, police charities, pension administrators, public services or another specialist provider.
Financial and pension concerns
If a problem relates to pension payments, scheme records or pension administration, contact the relevant pension administrator. Debt, benefits or wider financial difficulties may need specialist independent advice. Avoid sharing full bank details, passwords or security codes in an ordinary email when asking for help.
Health and wellbeing
For medical concerns, contact an appropriate healthcare professional. If someone is in immediate danger or there is a medical emergency, use the emergency services. Police-related welfare charities and other organisations may also provide practical or emotional support to eligible former colleagues and families.
Bereavement and loss
The death of a former colleague, spouse or partner can create both emotional and administrative difficulties. NARBTPO can help maintain community links and may be able to point families towards relevant Association or pension contacts. Formal death-benefit and estate matters must be dealt with through the organisations legally responsible for them.
Scams and personal safety
Retired colleagues can be targeted by impersonation, investment, pension and online scams. NARBTPO’s Stay Secure page contains practical advice on reducing common risks and checking suspicious contact independently.
